Joy Slaats
Visual Theatre Maker Born in Leuven, grew up in the city of lights called Eindhoven. I finished secondary school with my vwo certificate (A-levels) and wandered into the wide world to start 'the free year' at the Bernard Lievegoed University. A year full of personal development, new experiences and developing my portfolio. After this experience I knew for sure: I want to make theatre. I'm currently living and studying in Utrecht and I will graduate in the summer of 2017 as a theatermaker at the HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht). My head is full of stories which come to live on the stage. I see theatre as visual, textual and musical poetry with which I can make people wonder. Whether I create miniatureworlds, livestream camera film, pop-up illustrations, puppets, objects, shadowplay or analogue collages, it all starts in the studio and comes to live on the stage. In my plays I search for the magic of theatre. To see the mechanics and the magic at the same time. Puppetry and object theatre make the audience believe dead materials can come to life. That's why it's the most magical kind of theatre to me. Making visual theatre gives many possibilities in materials and media. That's why I start projects by researching the connection between the visual and thematical story of the play. My aim is to inspire the audience. Images and stories which wander through their minds and make space for new ideas. I strive to make engaging theatre to inspire us to be idealists and dreamers. As a visual theater maker I'd like to show you my work instead of writing about it. If you're curious, you can check out my portfolio and blog.
